Oral Preventative Assistant (OPA) Course

Learn about CDMA’s Oral Preventative Assistant (OPA) course, beginning September 2026, including dates, requirements, and curriculum.

Oral Preventative Assistant (OPA) Course

The Oral Preventative Assistant (OPA) course is one of the continuing education courses provided by the College of Dental Medicine-Arizona. The 2026 OPA course begins in September.

Course Description

Arizona Senate Bill 1124 was signed into law on March 31, 2025, which creates the certified role of oral preventive assistants (OPAs) for dental assistants.

This law lets qualified dental assistants perform specific preventive dental care to help workforce shortages in the state.

This establishes a pathway for dental assistants to practice as oral preventative assistants (OPA) upon completion of an expanded functions training course approved by the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners (BODEX).

Develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to perform approved preventive dental procedures safely and effectively. This comprehensive training combines evidence-based instruction, simulation, and supervised patient care.
