Overview of all affiliated programs
Experience pharmaceutical care in innovative community pharmacy settings. Midwestern University College of Pharmacy, Glendale Campus (MWU-CPG) is affiliated with three community pharmacy residency program in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Our partnerships with Walgreens, Kroger/Fry's, and Albertsons/Safeway allows residents opportunities to develop patient care skills in the community pharmacy setting while benefiting from the resources and teaching opportunities provided by MWU-CPG. Our unique emphasis on developing both community pharmacy practice and teaching skills provides residents with numerous career and professional opportunities.
Program Highlights

- Present residency projects at regional and national professional conferences.
- Participate in didactic lectures, workshops, student precepting, and other professional educational programs with MWU-CPG.
Duration
The residency is for 12 consecutive months beginning in June/July.
Qualifications of the Resident
Applicants for each program must have graduated with the PharmD degree and be eligible for pharmacist licensure in Arizona at the time they start the residency. Applicants must be motivated, self-directed, and have excellent communication skills. Work experience in community pharmacy, as well as a commitment to pursuing a career in this setting, is desirable.
Salary and Benefits
Each resident will receive a competitive stipend and benefit package. Support for attending regional and national professional meetings and conferences is also available.
Faculty Appointment
Each resident will receive a faculty appointment from MWU-CPG as a Visiting Instructor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. Benefits of the appointment include use of MWU facilities and opportunities to learn and teach with College of Pharmacy faculty.
Applications and Additional Information
Each program has its own independent process for selecting residents. All programs participate in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Residency Matching Program and require application through PhorCAS. Each program is fully accredited by ASHP.

Walgreens Pharmacy Residency Partnership
The purpose of the Walgreens Community Pharmacy Residency Program is to prepare pharmacist clinicians to provide direct patient care services as a community pharmacist and to work in academia. The residency experience is based in Phoenix, AZ at an URAC accredited Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy that is an innovative community pharmacy practice dedicated to providing clinical patient care services and is an ideal setting for the development of patient care programs. Residents will be enabled to achieve their professional goals, become a leader within the profession, provide compassionate care for members in their community, and contribute to the Walgreen Company's mission of advancing community pharmacy practice.
Residents in this setting will have a direct influence on patient outcomes through participation in patient counseling, immunization services, and medication therapy management. The resident will be involved in management of limited distribution medication and required clinical documentation.
Program Highlights
- Direct patient care delivered in the community pharmacy setting.
- Provide patient care services, including medication therapy management (MTM), health testing, immunizations, disease state management and prevention and wellness programs.
- Design and conduct a practice based research project.
- Participate in corporate-level electives including pharmacy management and store operations and Walgreens corporate - clinical program and quality.
- Disease state management programs.
- Complete a teaching certificate program through ASHP.
- Provide clinical instruction and serve as a preceptor to student pharmacists
- Present research project findings at appropriate regional and national professional conferences

Albertsons Companies (Safeway) Pharmacy Residency Partnership
Safeway and Midwestern University College of Pharmacy have partnered to provide an opportunity for residents to engage in direct patient care services and to gain experience working interprofessionally in community pharmacy. Residents have opportunities to provide direct patient care in a community pharmacy and in an ambulatory care setting. Residents complete a teaching certificate through Midwestern & CEimpact’s Learn to Teach in Practice (L2TiP) Teaching & Learning Curriculum. This program fosters development of core competencies in teaching, precepting, management, leadership, research, and innovation.
Program Highlights
- Provide patient care services, including medication therapy management (MTM), travel health, chronic condition management, and immunizations.
- Collaborate with health care providers to improve disease state management in an ambulatory care clinic environment at Valleywise Health and Missions of Mercy Clinic.
- Develop and implement new disease state management programs and new clinical services.
- Manage and lead a profitable pharmacy that is clinically effective.
- Participate in the corporate-level decision making process including pharmacy operations planning meetings, recruiting, and compliance.

Fry's Pharmacy Residency Partnership
The Fry's & MWU-CPG PGY-1 program sets itself apart from other community-based residencies due to its focus on diverse experiences within the Family Medicine Clinic, Dental Clinic, and teaching opportunities. Residents will have the opportunity at Fry's Pharmacy and the MWU Family Medicine/Multispecialty Clinic to conduct medication therapy management, diabetes, and anticoagulation management, immunizations, biometric screenings, community outreach, and leadership activities. The residency also provides experiences precepting and educating pharmacy students while completing the MWU-CPG Clinician Educators Program and conducting research at CPG. Graduates of the program will be proficient in clinical services and trained to be leaders and educators in the community, ambulatory care, and academic settings.

- Instruct Midwestern University College of Pharmacy student pharmacists in a health screenings elective, interprofessional dental and weekly professional skills development course.
- Serve as a preceptor to Midwestern University College of Pharmacy student pharmacists.
- Opportunity to conduct practice-based research.
- Complete MWU-CPG Clinician Educator’s Program.
