Master of Science in Nursing / Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Hybrid

The CCNE accredited Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program educates baccalaureate-prepared registered nurses to assess, diagnose and manage acute, chronic, and complex health needs of individuals from adolescence to end of life.

Program Overview

The CCNE-accredited Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)—Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program prepares registered nurses to provide evidence-based, person-centered primary care to adults and older adults. The 24-month program includes 72 quarter credits, with didactic coursework spanning eight quarters and an overlapping clinical practicum phase during the final three quarters.

  • Engaging online learning: Experienced and supportive nursing faculty use innovative teaching strategies to connect advanced nursing concepts with clinical practice.
  • Personalized support: Small student cohorts provide opportunities for individualized guidance from instructors and faculty advisors.
  • On-campus intensive learning experiences: Students complete two on-campus intensives featuring interprofessional instruction and hands-on learning in Midwestern University’s simulation center. These experiences help students develop and demonstrate essential skills before entering clinical practicum.

Beginning in the second year, clinical practica provide supervised, hands-on opportunities to strengthen clinical reasoning, patient assessment, diagnosis, and management. With program assistance and guidance, students gain experience across varied settings serving adults and older adults, including primary care clinics, internal medicine practices, long-term care, assisted living, and community-based services.

Through integrated coursework and clinical experiences, graduates demonstrate advanced nursing and specialty competencies aligned with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials.

The MSN—Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program is currently authorized to enroll students residing in Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming. To be considered for admission to the Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) / Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, applicants must submit the following documented evidence:

  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing granted by an institutionally accredited college or university.

  2. A current, active Registered Nurse license in at least one U.S. state or territory, with no practice restrictions, probation, or suspension on any current or past state license.

  3. A current resume or curriculum vitae describing clinical, educational, or administrative nursing practice relevant to successful completion of an advanced nursing degree.

  4. A competitive undergraduate GPA. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale is preferred unless the published program policy establishes a different minimum.

  5. A letter of intent for graduate school admission.

  • Online didactic coursework covering advanced nursing concepts, including biostatistics, epidemiology, pharmacology, physiology, and pathophysiology.
  • Two required on-campus intensives learning experiences focused on comprehensive health assessment, physical examination, and clinical skills development.
  • Supervised clinical practicum experiences totaling 760 hours, preparing students to assess, diagnose, and manage the health needs of adults and older adults across diverse practice settings.

Through integrated coursework and applied clinical experiences, graduates demonstrate advanced nursing and specialty competencies aligned with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials.
