Midwestern University’s Glendale Campus welcomed more than 160 participants on March 14 for the 6th Annual Ultrafest, hosted by the Ultrasound Interest Group at AZCOM. The student-run event, which is now one of the largest of its kind in the country, brought together learners from multiple MWU programs, including osteopathic medicine, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, podiatry, dental medicine, and veterinary medicine, along with students from other Arizona medical schools.
Attendees rotated through a full day of hands-on workshops covering a wide range of ultrasound applications, from echocardiography and eFAST exams to nerve blocks, central line placement, OB/GYN imaging, and musculoskeletal techniques. New sessions and case-based pathology workshops added depth for both beginners and more advanced learners.
The event also featured a keynote presentation by Carla L. Gartrell, D.V.M., J.D., DACVIM, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine-Arizona (CVMA), who explored the parallels and distinctions between ultrasound use in veterinary and human medicine.
Ultrafest concluded with the always-anticipated “SonoWars” competition, where teams tested their imaging skills, clinical knowledge, and speed in a series of challenges. Team “MINCEMEAT PIE,” comprised of MWU PA students, claimed first place, followed by “PIEZOELECTRIC PIES” from AZCOM.
Organized entirely by students with faculty support, Ultrafest continues to grow as a signature interprofessional learning experience at Midwestern University, showcasing both technical skill-building and collaborative education.
