On September 13, over 300 Midwestern University students, faculty, and staff gathered together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival. This is a traditional Chinese custom where family and friends join together to thank the moon for good health, happiness, and for the harvest. The Moon Festival is one of the most important festivals in China, second only to Chinese New Year. This event is also celebrated in other Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Hosted by the Asian Pacific Islander and Desi Student Pharmacist Organization (APID SPO), the Moon Festival included custom desserts such as custard cakes, mochi, fruit, tea, and other goodies to symbolize these traditions that date back 3,000 years. APID-SPO shared cultural awareness by immersing Midwestern University students, faculty, and staff in traditional Moon Festival activities and by sharing information on how and why different cultures celebrate this event.
